A proposal for a whole-home water treatment system can sound comprehensive without telling you which water lines the equipment will actually serve. The system may treat every indoor fixture, only the hot water, or most of the house while leaving certain sinks, hose bibs or appliances untreated.
Before you commit, ask the provider to trace the proposed water path with you. The goal is not to redesign your plumbing. It is to make sure the written scope matches the result you expect.
Start with the problem you are trying to solve
Write down where you notice the problem. Check the kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, showers, toilets, laundry connections, refrigerator supply, dishwasher and outdoor faucets. Note whether the issue appears on cold water, hot water or both.
This matters because treatment placed before the water heater usually affects both hot and cold branches downstream. Equipment installed on a single branch may serve only part of the house. A provider should be able to connect the proposed installation point to the fixtures where you want a change.
Ask a direct question: Which exact fixtures will receive treated water after this work is complete?
Find the plumbing split
Many homes have branches that leave the main water line before the proposed treatment location. Those branches will remain untreated unless the scope includes plumbing changes.
Ask the provider to identify where water enters the home and where the first branches split off. Look for lines feeding:
- Outdoor hose bibs
- Irrigation systems
- A detached garage or workshop
- A finished basement sink or bathroom
- A refrigerator or pot filler
- A humidifier, boiler or other connected appliance
- An addition built after the original house
Do not assume nearby fixtures share the same branch. Two faucets in adjacent rooms can be supplied through different plumbing routes.
Decide what should remain untreated
Leaving a line untreated can be intentional. Outdoor watering often does not need the same treatment as indoor water. Avoiding unnecessary treatment may also reduce system demand and the amount of filter media, salt or water used during operation.
But an untreated line should be a conscious decision. If an outdoor faucet is used for washing vehicles, filling a pool or supplying a workshop, you may want to discuss whether the untreated water will still create the problem you are trying to address.
Ask the provider to label each excluded line on the proposal. A vague note such as “outside lines excluded” is less useful than a list of the actual faucets or branches that will remain untreated.
Check the kitchen drinking water plan
Some proposals combine whole-home equipment with a separate drinking water unit under the kitchen sink. Confirm which kitchen faucet will dispense that water and whether the refrigerator or ice maker will be connected to it.
Ask whether the existing refrigerator line can be reused, whether a new line is included and whether the distance or routing creates any limitations. If the drinking water unit serves only a dedicated faucet, the regular kitchen faucet may still deliver water from the whole-home system rather than the under-sink unit.
The proposal should distinguish these water paths clearly. “Filtered kitchen water” is not specific enough.
Ask about the water heater
If the treatment system is installed on the main cold-water supply before the water heater, treated water should eventually reach hot-water fixtures. The change may not be immediate because the water heater and hot-water piping still contain previously untreated water.
Ask whether the provider expects the water heater to be drained, flushed or simply allowed to turn over through normal use. Also ask whether the condition of the heater could affect the result. Sediment or scale already inside a heater does not disappear just because the incoming water changes.
If the proposal treats only the hot-water line, ask why. That layout may address a narrow concern, but it will not change cold water at sinks, toilets or other cold-only connections.
Confirm what happens during bypass
A bypass valve lets water continue flowing around treatment equipment during service or maintenance. When the system is bypassed, downstream fixtures generally receive untreated water.
Ask the provider to show where the bypass will be located and which fixtures it affects. Confirm whether any treated-water storage tank or separate drinking water unit will behave differently while the main equipment is bypassed.
You should also know whether the bypass is simple enough to operate without tools and how to identify its normal service position. These details affect your ability to respond to a leak or equipment problem.
Look for cross-connections and alternate supplies
Some properties have more than one water source or an unusual plumbing arrangement. Examples include a private well used alongside a utility connection, a cistern, a seasonal line or a separate supply for an outbuilding.
Tell the provider about every known source before accepting the design. Ask whether any valve could allow untreated water to enter treated plumbing. If the provider cannot trace an unusual arrangement confidently, the proposal should state what further plumbing inspection is needed.
Put the fixture map in writing
You do not need a formal plumbing blueprint. A simple written list or sketch can prevent misunderstandings. It should show:
- Where the treatment equipment connects to the main line
- Which indoor fixtures receive treated water
- Which outdoor fixtures remain untreated
- Whether the water heater receives treated water
- Which faucet receives separate drinking water
- Whether the refrigerator or ice maker is included
- Any new plumbing lines included in the price
- Any inaccessible or unverified branches
If plumbing must be rerouted to achieve the promised coverage, confirm that labor and materials are included. Also ask who will repair walls, ceilings or finished surfaces if access is required.
Verify the result after installation
Before signing, ask how the provider will demonstrate that the intended fixtures are on the treated side. The check might involve comparing water characteristics at selected taps, tracing flow while valves are operated or confirming the new piping route visually.
Choose representative test points in advance. A useful set could include the closest cold-water tap, the farthest bathroom, a hot-water fixture, the kitchen drinking water faucet and an outdoor faucet expected to remain untreated.
The appropriate check depends on the treatment process and the water problem. What matters is agreeing on a practical verification method before the equipment is installed.
The final question to ask
Point to each fixture that matters to you and ask, “After this installation, what water reaches this fixture?” If the answer is uncertain, the scope is not ready for approval.
A good proposal defines both the equipment and the water path. Knowing where treated water will go is one of the simplest ways to avoid paying for a system that solves the right problem in the wrong part of the house.
