Visible grit can make a sediment filter seem like the obvious answer. Sometimes it is. But particles at a faucet can also come from a water heater, deteriorating plumbing, mineral scale or a single clogged fixture. Before buying equipment, determine whether the material is entering the house with the water or forming somewhere inside the plumbing.

Start by describing what you see

Catch the material in a clean, clear container. Note whether it looks like sand, rust flakes, white chips, black specks or soft debris. Let the container sit. True sediment usually settles or remains visibly suspended. Discoloration that stays evenly mixed may involve dissolved material rather than particles that a basic sediment filter can capture.

Rub a small amount between your fingers after removing it from the water. Hard, gritty particles point toward sand, pipe scale or mineral fragments. Soft black material may come from a deteriorating rubber washer, hose or flexible plumbing component. White flakes may be mineral scale released from a faucet aerator or water heater. Do not identify the source by color alone. Use the location checks below.

Check whether the problem is at one fixture or throughout the house

Remove and inspect faucet aerators and showerhead screens. Then run cold water from several fixtures, including one close to where the water service enters the home. If only one faucet has debris, inspect that fixture, its supply lines and nearby plumbing before considering whole-home treatment.

If particles appear at many cold-water fixtures, the material may be entering through the service line or coming from shared household piping. If it appears only on the hot side, focus first on the water heater and hot-water plumbing. A whole-home sediment filter installed on the incoming line will not solve debris created downstream inside the heater.

Compare cold water with hot water

Fill one container with cold water and another with hot water from the same faucet. Use a fixture that does not mix the two streams automatically if possible. Compare the amount, color and texture of the material.

Debris limited to hot water can indicate scale or internal water-heater deterioration. Debris in both samples suggests a source farther upstream, although old household piping can still contribute particles to both lines. If the hot sample contains much more material, ask a plumber or treatment provider to inspect the heater before recommending filtration.

See whether flushing changes the result

After the plumbing has been unused for a while, collect the first water from a problem fixture. Then run the cold water and collect another sample. Material concentrated in the first sample may be accumulating in the fixture or nearby pipe. Material that continues steadily is more consistent with an ongoing source.

Also compare normal flow with fully opened flow. A strong burst can dislodge scale that does not appear during ordinary use. Tell the provider exactly how the test was performed, since a jar collected after prolonged flushing does not describe the same condition as the first draw from a faucet.

For a private well, look for operating patterns

If the home uses a well, note whether grit appears after the pump starts, after heavy water use or whenever water pressure changes. Sand or silt can enter because of conditions at the well, pump placement or changes in the well itself. A filter may protect household plumbing, but it does not explain why new sediment is reaching the house.

Ask the well contractor or treatment provider to inspect a sample and determine whether the source should be corrected before filtration is sized. Also ask whether the proposed filter can handle the actual particle load without frequent clogging or an unacceptable pressure loss.

For public water, separate incoming debris from household pipe scale

Collect a cold-water sample as close as practical to the point where the service line enters the house. Compare it with water from a distant fixture. If the entry-point sample is clear but downstream samples contain flakes, household plumbing is the more likely source. If debris is already present near the entry point, document it with clear containers and photographs before contacting the water utility or a treatment provider.

Do not assume brown water is automatically filterable sediment. Rust-colored particles may settle and be captured mechanically, while dissolved iron can pass through an ordinary sediment filter and become visible later. The treatment choice depends on which form is present.

Bring useful evidence to the provider

Save a sample if practical and write down where it was collected, whether it was hot or cold, whether it was the first draw, and whether the material settled. Photograph clogged aerators and any staining separately. These details are more useful than simply reporting dirty water.

Ask the provider to explain what the proposed equipment is designed to remove, how the particle size was determined, how often the filter will need attention, how you will know it is clogging and what pressure loss to expect as it loads. If the recommendation includes backwashing equipment, ask where the discharge will go and what routine maintenance is required.

Know when a sediment filter fits the problem

A sediment filter makes sense when there is a repeatable load of solid particles entering upstream of the fixtures you want to protect. It is a weaker answer when debris appears only at one faucet, comes only from hot water, originates in deteriorating plumbing or is actually dissolved material.

The useful decision is not simply whether grit is present. It is where the grit begins, whether it is truly particulate and how much reaches the house during normal use. Establish those facts first. Then compare treatment proposals against the problem you have actually observed.
